En Al-Ándalus, en el siglo X, a pesar de que no era una convivencia pacífica o equitativa, musulmanes, cristianos y judíos compartían calles y plazas. Cada uno viaja y observa el mundo desde su reducida propia experiencia y caminando por Kuala Lumpur yo paseaba por mi reversionada Al- Ándalus.
En Malasia, la religión oficial y predominante es el Islam, pero podemos encontrar templos budistas y taoístas a los que acude la comunidad china y santuarios hinduistas para aquella india.
Estas pinturas sobre KL se centran en como decía Juan Ramón Jiménez, las minorías siempre. Las dos comunidades (china e india) con sus luces y sombras han sabido encontrar su lugar en la gran urbe. Y en el proceso de adaptarse y convivir, han impregnado todo con sus propias identidades. Se puede ver como sus raíces han ido profundizando en el hormigón y han crecido torcidas pero robustas.
In Al-Andalus, in the 10th century, even though it wasn't a peaceful or equitable coexistence Muslims, Christians and Jews shared the streets and squares. Each one of us travels and observes the world from our own reduced experience. And for me, walking around Kuala Lumpur was like wandering through a new version of Al-Andalus.
In Malaysia, Islam is the official and predominant religion, but there are also a lot of Buddhist and Taoist temples around the cities for the Chinese citizens, or stunning Hindu shrines for the Indian community, too.
These paintings about KL focus on, as Juan Ramón Jiménez said, “minorities always”. These two societies (Chinese and Indian) with their play of light and shadow have managed to find a place of their own in this immense city. Within the process of adapting and living together, they have imbued everything with their particular identity. Their roots have entered the concrete side-walks and have grown crooked but still steady and robust.
